THE BABYS ARE TRUE AS THEIR SONGS
Many true music lovers and those who just appreciate a great tune have heard the music group THE BABYS for many years now. Songs like EVERY TIME I THINK OF YOU and ISN'T IT TIME still are played on radio in classic rock stations . Though the lineup has changed they still have the passion especially with their first album in 30 years. Many remember John Waite as the lead singer but a young man JOHN BISAHA has taken control with energy, passion and a true kinship and showmanship to his fans that truly appreciate his talent. JOEY SYKES is also a new member and he too has qualities that we all apreciate. The two founding members WALLY STOCKER and TONY BROCK still play and perform as they did from the beginning and I truly felt I was in a time warp back to the late 70;s and 80's. After their show they came out and sat down signing autographs ad chatting with everyone giving their fans the indiivual attention you do not see every day. They were all marvelous and my words can not describe how kind they were to everyone. I would strongly suggest to catch their show when they come to an area near your home.I will always call them friends especially John as they are true class and genuine. They even took the time to answer questions in an interview process that were enlightling and I feel everyone would enjoy. The questions were to Tony and Wally as they were the original members.
They were as following.
1.IF YOU COULD PERFORM WITH ANY MUSICIAN LIVE OR IN THE STUDIO,WHO
WOULD THEY BE AND WHY?
Wally: As far as vocalists go - I would like to perform either live or in the studio with Paul Rogers. He has always been one of my favorite singers. I have followed his career since he was in Free to Bad Company, and his solo projects. So I would like like to play with him. As far as musicians go - it would be nice to play alongside David Gilmour. Trade off some riffs - would be really nice!
Tony: I would love to play with Hendrix - the excitement that he pulled out of the hat was incredible. He is not my all-time favorite guitarist, but to be on stage and get that energy would fire me up. His drummers played more than I do - so I would set up a lot more space for him, but I'd like to give him some groove and make it feel great.
2. IS THERE ANY SONG THAT YOU WOULD HAVE WRITTEN?
Wally: Happy Birthday! (Chuckles...) That's a tough one!
Tony: Yeah - Imagine, by John Lennon. Now that's a lovely tune. The way he put it together was so clever. The rawness of it. You just didn't put an upright piano against a wall in those days and just sing a song. That song made people think - and cry.
3. WERE THERE ANY BABYS SONGS THAT YOU PERFORMED THAT YOU WERE
SURPRISED THAT THEY WERE NOT A TOP TEN HIT?
Wally: Well, we only had the two top tens, but it thought Back on My Feet Again and Midnight Rendezvous would have done better. Head First as well...
Tony: Postcard. It's one of those three minute deals that in England you could have a one hit wonder and never be heard from again. Head First was our underground rock hit that set The Babys a bit apart from others. We could ballad and rock. We love playing that one. I also would have loved Silver Dreams to be a hit. I was lucky enough to sing it. And write it. That song means a lot to me.
WHAT MUSIC GROUPS DO YOU LISTEN TO TODAY AND ARE THERE ANY THAT REMIND
YOU ALL OF YOURSELVES?
Wally: I like Elbow - a British group. I also listen to Imagine Dragons. Although my main listening pleasure is still classic rock...
Tony: Good question. I listen to a broader range of music today. As a producer I need to. So I learn more and more daily. I like The Killers a lot. At home I listen to classical music to relax.
4. IF YOU WERE NOT MUSICIANS WHAT DO YOU BELIVE YOU MIGHT HAVE OR
ENJOYED ALSO DOING? ALSO BEFORE YOUR MUSIC ROOTS BEGAN WHAT WAS THE
STANGEST JOB YOU HAD PRIOR?
Wally: I can't reveal what my strangest job was - it's not for easy reading! I always fancied myself as a race car driver when I was young. I still do!
Tony: My strangest job is working with John Bisaha - haha! In England - we leave school around 14-15. Before I could become a musician, I would carry bricks from ground floor to top floor for roofing. Hated it! Then I would go home and rehearse!
5. YOUR ALBUM I'LL HAVE SOME OF THAT', DID YOU HAVE THE SAME PLEASURE
AND EXCITMENT RECORDING AFTER A 30 YEAR HIATUS?
Wally: I certainly did. It was very exciting making a Babys record after all of these years. We were all off doing other things with different bands with different music. It was nice to come back 'home' where it all started. So yeah - the excitement level was higher than even back in the old days. We may have taken it for granted back then. Being able to play with Tony again is the best. Couldn't wait to get to the studio every day.
Tony: Absolutely. Yes. We had a bit of a learning curve with the new band lineup. John Bisaha gave me a boost in interest again - which I had been missing for quite awhile. I wanted to put The Babys back together for a long time, but there was no one that I auditioned that could give me that excitement back. The story has now been told many times - but we had John over here at the studio numerous times - so many that he probably started getting miffed until we had made the decision. It was such a relief when we chose John, but that in itself created a new challenge. John obviously knew he needed to learn John Waite's vocal parts - and his inflections and tone. But at the same time - he needed to be himself. If we weren't performing Babys tunes, we could have named the band anything - but we all felt unfinished business with The Babys - so we kept on. It was great getting Wally back into the fold - he was in Florida. We moved him back out and we are as close as we have ever been. The band has its own magic now. It's what I was looking for. Happiness. It's a great thing. After 30 years we still have a huge amount of fans. Now the fun is to find them and create new fans. John is stretching - and he makes me try harder. Wally and Joey round this all out. The magic is there. At this age - it's all you can ask for.
6. CHEMISTRY IS ALL SO SPECIAL IN A GREAT BAND AND HAS THAT BEEN
SPARKED AGAIN WITH ADDED MEMBERS JOHN BISAHA AND JOEY SYKES?
Wally: Absolutely. It's a great thing. Finding John was key to get this going. Without him - we wouldn't be able to continue the legacy of The Babys. The chemistry we have now is very special. We never had an additional guitar player for all songs. That opens things up quite a bit and helps with our look and sound when we play live. It's exciting to have John and Joey as not only band mates but great friends - family even.
Tony: Joey is a great songwriter for melodies and pop hits. I love melodies. I was brought up singing in the church with my Mum - was a great time. I try to reach people through melodies. And Joey I think can reach people with the melodic tunes that he writes. Add Wally and John into the mix and we are all melody makers. Add some groove to that and there you go. The magic and the passion is all there. We are happy that it is. There's nothing worse than a lot of hard work and having nothing to show for it. Back in the day - we thought we were one album away from pushing us over the top. We are really happy now that we are able to do so. Everything happens for a reason and we are enjoying it immensely. The jokes are starting to come easily. Once you can joke and have a laugh together - that magic starts to seep in. We've got that now.
