GRACE SLICK: A TRUE ICON

When we were growing up and music became an escape for us all, the 60's produced some of the greatest. Music that still stands tall to this day. We all loved the BEATLES and the ROLLING STONES, but other groups like JEFFERSON AIRPLANE had some of the most loyal followers. The first time I heard and saw GRACE SLICK perform was in 1969 at an outdoor festival with CHUCK BERRY, CANNED HEAT, and headliner, JEFFERSON AIRPLANE. Grace hypnotized us all will her rendition of White Rabbit and Volunteer so that we fell in love with her. She had an onstage presence that told us she was one of the first lead singers of a supergroup who was a woman.
The years went by and never in my wildest dreams did I believe there would be an opportunity to meet the legend. But,  if you have patience, good things will usually happen.
Over the past several years she took up painting and had quite a different and unique style. She painted the rock stars of the the earlier days and also stayed quite often on the theme of the WHITE RABBIT.
When we heard that she was showing and selling some of her art at a local art dealer's, there was nothing going to stop me from attending. As she sat there at a table, she still had the presence of a queen,  although she had aged and her  hair had turned white. After buying 2 pieces of her artwork,   I asked if she would sign a few items. At first, the art dealer said, " Maybe one." After explaining that spending the money on the art, I did not believe that she would have a problem signing a few items - and I was correct. We chatted with her, took pictures, and she signed my Airplane and Starship albums. The one crazy thing that stood out was when I told her I still have my ticket from WOODSTOCK because I was allowed to go due to my age and the strong will of my mother. Her eyes lit up and she said, "Maybe you should sell it as it is worth some money." I politely told her not at this time, but truthfully, if she would have told me she would have loved to have one also, I probably would have given it to her.  Grace has had some medical conditions but word is she is doing better and painting once again. As a performer there was no one like her, and as a person - well,  the time I met her, I will always cherish.
