How it Began
Autographing
has been a passion of Docs for 50 years now. He started
when he was 10 years old when my Wonderful Father Jay Schleichkorn who was
Director of United Cerebral Palsy in New York State took Doc along to the
various telethons that were held in New York. Once a year he would travel with
him to Albany and also New York City where many celebrities would donate their
time and help raise funds for the noble cause. Added to that Docs parents
would take his Brothers to plays and concerts on Broadway where many times
famous actors and actresses would be in the audience and were so
approachable and gracious if someone asked them to sign their
playbill. Doc was in love with old movies and marveled at the actors on
the screen from Gary Cooper, Clark Gable, Humphrey Bogart and Bette Davis to
name a few that I wrote too many of these stars in Hollywood. It was so simple
in those days JOHN WAYNE HOLLYWOOD <CALIFORNIA. No additional address, zip
code and the letter was only 3 cents, imagine that! And not like today you did
not add a stamped self addressed envelope to hope that you request is granted.
Some were photo printed, some secretarial and
some were definitely genuine. Doc’s friend also believed he was bitten by
this collecting habit by his father who was a great collector of TIME MAGAZINE
covers which ever week had a personality from politicians, actors and
events which they still do today. He gave Doc most of his collection which is
still cherished to this day. So now since Docs first 3 autographs were
JAY NORTH of Dennis the Menace Fame, ROBERT CONRAD the actor of the Wild WILD WEST
Series and JOHNNY NASH the singer which is still preserved to this day nicely
protected. Doc has many historical items which he purchased from reputable
dealers many years ago and over the last 20 years and has donated his time to
meet personally everyone from Athletes, Politicians, Musicians and TV and
Movie stars.
Those who share Doc’s passion get
a thrill and so many of our friends call it an addiction. Whatever it may
be interpreted as there are high and lows all the time. Successes, failures and
even lots of friends can also be involved but meeting many of them to see how
their personality is in person and what is on the screen is always interesting.
One celebrity was asked “Are you anything like your character on the TV
Screen" and he responded," ONLY MY SHOE SIZE". So after 50
years Doc has amassed over 75,000 autographs and knows one day he will probably
sell, donate the special items and give away do to dear friends.
